Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning “Science of Life.” It is one of the world’s oldest practices for holistic healing, and has been modernized in the Western world in several ways. One way you can incorporate Ayurveda into your own lifestyle is through your skincare routine. Here is a simple guide increasing self-love and relaxation through therapeutic practices and Ayurvedic rituals.

1. Facial Massage while Cleansing

Did you know most people are not cleansing their face properly? We often rush through cleansing, rubbing on some soap and rinsing it off before hurrying out of the bathroom. But for proper cleansing, it is best to take your time (30 seconds minimum) so the cleanser can emulsify dirt and bacteria out of your pores. Allow yourself to slow down and focus on the task at hand, so it is a soothing experience instead of a quick chore.
Grab the cleanser of your choice and follow these steps:
  • Gently stroke upwards on your neck to your jawline. It is important to not skip the neck area, think of it as an extension of your face.

  • With two of your fingers, make small circular motions on your chin, then the sides of your mouth.

  • Wipe back and forth across your upper lip

  • Massage large circles around your cheeks, eye area, and temples

  • Scrub the sides of your nostrils and upward on your nose until you reach your forehead

  • Massage your forehead with zigzag motions, from the center out. Don’t forget to reach all the way up your hairline.

  • Circle around your eyes one more time. Hold at your temples, take a deep breath, and release.

  • Rinse and pat dry.

2. Spray with Rosewater
